Great Hall of the People is located at the western edge of Tiananmen Square in Beijing and is a popular political gathering place. The site is used for legislative and ceremonial activities of the People’s Republic of China and the Communist Party of China.
The hall is a meeting place for full sessions of the Chinese parliament and is used for special events like national level meetings of various social and political organizations besides anniversary celebrations. The central section of the hall contains the Great Auditorium while the northern section contains the State Banquet Hall.
The ceiling of the hall is decorated with a galaxy of lights with a large red light at the centre of the ceiling and a pattern of water waves nearby representing the people. The hall is equipped with audio-visual facilities and other systems adaptable to various types and sizes of meetings. There is a simultaneous interpretation system with language booth.
The American country music trio Lucy Angel became the first Western American group invited to perform at the hall before audience of dignitaries and government officials. The hall is a marvelous specimen of architecture and decoration and remains one of the finest examples of auditorium and performance venues in the country and world.
